To Sweeten or Not to Sweeten

One of the decisions that people who go into DIY e-liquids have to make is whether to use a sweetener. If you check out many homemade e-juice recipes online, you will find sweeteners among the ingredients. Sweeteners are widely used in the vaping industry by manufacturers of vape liquids. Virtually, all super sweet candy, dessert, and even some fruity vapes contain sweeteners. There are many different types of sweeteners to choose from when making an e-juice.

Let’s look at the most popular sweeteners on the market.

Erythritol is quickly becoming the sweetener of choice for many e-liquid makers. This sweetener occurs naturally in fruits and fermented foods. However, it can be synthesized artificially. Erythritol has the same intense sweetness as sucralose. However, it is not a coil killer like sucralose. If you want to create an e-juice with bold sweetness, but you do not want to have to deal with gunked up coils, try erythritol instead of sucralose.

Ethyl Maltol is an artificial sweetener, but it is not as sweet as sucralose. It tends to accentuate the sweetness of a vape juice blend rather than make it sweet. Therefore, if you are creating a fruity vape juice and you need to perk up the sweetness, Ethyl Maltol is recommended. Some people choose to mix sucralose and Ethyl Maltol.

Xylitol is another excellent sweetener to try. Just like erythritol, it occurs naturally but can be produced artificially. Xylitol is very similar to erythritol. It has a bold sweetness, and it is easy on coils. The only downside is that it could possibly mute some flavors. Therefore, you need to experiment with xylitol before you decide to use it.

Sucralose is undoubtedly the number one sweetener used in the vaping industry. Sucralose is an artificial sweetener that can give your e-juice a bold, sweet taste. However, it has some downsides. For example, it tends to make your e-juice a coil killer. Also, some people complain of experiencing a headache after vaping an e-juice that has a high level of sucralose. If you want to add sucralose to your e-liquid, measure the percentage carefully. Usually, 1 percent to 2 percent of this sweetener is all you need to liven the taste of your e-juice.

These are the most popular sweeteners in the DIY vape juice world today. I guess stevia should also be part of that list. I guess the first question to ask yourself is how sweet you want the vape juice to be? If you are making a candy e-juice, then it can be very sweet. However, if you are making a fruit cocktail e-juice, the sweetness doesn’t have to be very intense. Once you determine the level of sweetness you need in your vape juice, you can choose the appropriate sweetener to use. Check out the Flavorah website for best e-juice recipes.
